GUERRILLA CITY GARDENING. A CRITICAL VIEW BY CZECH VIDEO

Das Gärtnern wurde in der Tschechoslowakei — ähnlich wie in der DDR — zu einer weit verbreiteten sozialen Praxis. Es stand auch für die Sehnsucht nach privatem Raum und verkörperte für Erwachsene den Traum vom Eigenheim und für Kinder den vom Abenteuer — beides in sehr begrenztem Umfang.

Gardening became a widespread social practice in Czechoslovakia, as it did in the GDR. It also represented a longing for private space and embodied the dream of home ownership for adults and adventure for children — both to a very limited extent.

Dieser Kurzfilm aus den letzten Tagen der kommunistischen Tschechoslowakei zeigt das Leben eines jungen Punks in der Spannung zwischen jugendlicher Rebellion und überwachendem Staat. Mit körnigen Bildern und ungefilterten Interviews ist er eine ergreifende Zeitkapsel der späten sozialistischen Dissidenz: rau, schnell und unverkennbar real.
This short film from the final days of communist Czechoslovakia depicts the life of a young punk caught between youthful rebellion and state surveillance. With grainy images and unfiltered interviews, it is a poignant time capsule of late socialist dissent: raw, fast-paced and unmistakably real.

Sylva Poláková
Sylva Poláková works as a film historian, audiovisual curator and archivist at the Národní filmový archiv, Prague. Her main focus is experimental film and the moving image in an interdisciplinary perspective. She graduated in Film Studies at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague. Since 2020 she has been leading the research project Audiovisual work outside the context of cinema: documentation, archiving and access. She is engaged in lecturing and curatorial activities and contributes to specialised publications, mainly with profiles and interviews with Czech artists working with the moving image. (2022)
