Abstract narrative building! What kind of journey is stimulated from a space of abstraction? How does our imagination impact how we create and experience forms and colours that are not figurative? In this course we will explore abstract landscapes and create new visual languages through painting; creating imaginary spaces that don't necessarily rely on lived experience, yet still evoke emotional responses. We will work with how the repetition of lines brings rhythm, how two colours side by side might start to vibrate, how tones and hues give depth and nuisance, how it all adds to a visual embodied experience, where the eye may constantly shift, making associations and building abstract narratives.
Falling in love with your materials, and recognizing that it is a relationship will allow us to coax out what's already there, opening to unexpected outcomes. At the beginning of this course, we’ll spend some time building those relationships, as that will be the basis for activating the imagination and deepening our understanding.
In this course, we will also explore colour interaction, focusing on how colour can shift our perception. We will look at how form can be used to create rhythms, repetitions, and composition. We will work with techniques for creating perspective and how to apply paint, thinking about the placement of thin washes in contrast with hard edge lines. Through this process we aim to create a body of work in a short period. This will open up an opportunity to explore an inner relationship between our imagination and what we have visually created. It will be a journey into abstract narrative building.
