Stipendienprogramm

Occupation, Occupancy, Orchestrating
Overpowering and Ownership of Utopias
scholarship programme for Autumn 2019
riesa efau. Kultur Forum Dresden

In the autumn of 2019, the weeks and months 30 years will lie behind, in which the disintegration of the system of the GDR and other states of the former Eastern Bloc first accelerated dramatically and finally led to a fundamental transformation of the form of society into another, ultimately into the capitalist system.

For the people in these countries, especially at the beginning of this process, there were concrete and tangible goals and ideas just as there were ideas, hopes, dreams, utopias. We are concerned about the latter. What utopias were there, but also for many who followed these upheavals from other regions of the world?  What has become of these ideas?

How do contemporary artists look at the utopias of 1989/90, at that time of upheaval, how do contemporary artists deal with a time of great possibilities, fantasies and illusions?

What happened to the utopias formulated during this period? With the social, with the private? Did they disappear from view, from memory? Were they or are they only buried? Have some perhaps changed into the opposite? Did they perhaps have to go overboard in order not to disturb the integration into the real existing capitalism? Or was precisely this process of capitalization the fulfillment and thus dissolution of the most widespread utopia of those months?

What do these (still) concern us today - or not? And which utopias were not formulated at that time from today's point of view, were missing in the discourse?

To develop works for the exhibition project, riesa efau will be awarding scholarships of €1,000 each in autumn 2019. The only condition is the development of a feasible work in the thematic context.

In the time between the awarding of the scholarship and the start of the exhibition, it is possible to live for up to four weeks in Dresden in accommodation provided by riesa efau and to use the rooms and workshops of riesa efau for work. The scholarship holders will be invited to Dresden for the opening on 7 November 2019 and the artists symposium on 8 November. Travel costs of up to 300 € and overnight accommodation for the stay in Dresden will be covered by riesa efau according to the Saxon Travel Expenses Act.

Payment will be made in two tranches, €600 at start of the scholarship and €400 at the handover of the artwork for the exhibition. A budget of up to 500 € for materials or other costs depending on the budget specified in the application will be made available for the realisation of the work. Any equipment necessary for the presentation, such as players, monitors, projectors must be specified, but is not part of the material budget. This will be provided by riesa efau.

We look forward to receiving applications by e-mail to frank.eckhardtriesa-efau.de until 15 September 2019. These should include at least an artistic CV and a concept for the planned work, including a cost estimate for the realisation in German or English.

The decision about the scholarships will be made by the advisory board of the Motorenhalle immediately after the closing date for applications.

Applicants will be informed of the results by e-mail.
