SAT 4.10.2014 8 pm | DISCUSSION: Do murals support gentrification? Altes Wettbüro, Antonstraße 8, 01097 Dresden
An urban district with murals undoubtedly betters the life quality of its inhabitants. Previously grey walls, now take on a particular set of aesthetics. These could lead to identification, especially when done in conjuction with local residents. Visually stimulating „upgrades“ of an urban district can also become marketing strategies for real estate agents. Hippness, a creative environment and commited participating residents make those areas more attractive for others. Rent increases, apartments get renovated and the demographics change; the process of gentrification creeps in. Although murals are part of the subculture that surrounds graffiti, street art, urban art and they also have become a part of the present context of art. Often this works are installed unasked, they are part of a critical counterculture, and gentrification is one of its topics. In contrast are murals a domesticated decoration-design of the public space, easily accessible to the district marketing? How to interpret subcultural and sociocultural projects in these contexts? Is it possible to separate monetary upgrade processes and integration processes for a district? Are there any actual existing strategies against this? with: Javier Abarca (ES), Andreas Ulrich (DE), Georg Barringhaus (DE) presentation: Denise Ackermann (DE)
